Many people know what a duvet cover is, but what is a duvet ("due-vay"), and where does it come from? In the United States, we hear the phrases "duvet covers" and "down comforters" and overall, most people know what those items are. In other countries such as Canada and Europe, "duvet" refers to the actual comforter (down comforter) and the cover is the protection to the duvet much like a pillowcase is to a pillow. Duvet is a French word that translates to "down" (referring to the down in birds); this is where the United States gets the phrase "down comforter". As a result, a "duvet cover" refers to the covering of a duvet/down comforter.
Do you see a new duvet cover in your short-term future? If so, it should be a bright spot on your horizon. But it is a bright spot that would fade significantly if you have to return the cover after the purchase. To help avoid this, as you get ready to shop, make and keep in mind three decisions related to the size, comfort level and style of your new duvet cover. With a good set of criteria in hand, you are much more likely to be happy with the duvet cover that you choose.
Special duvet covers to battle the dust-mites. Asthma sufferers or allergy prone sufferers have a hard time keeping the dust-mites in check. Dust-mites are microscopic arachnids which thrive on dust especially in the down fillings of pillows and quilts. They comprise of almost 80% of the dust around the house!
When looking at a cover, there may be a few things to consider. What color should you consider? What should your duvet cover to be made out of? What should the thread count be? In most instances, a down comforter is plain in color, usually white. Most people like to have their bedspreads match a certain color or design in their bedroom. A duvet cover may be just what they are looking for! They come in a variety of colors and unique designs; a person will be able to find just the cover to fit their every need.
The fabric is another important thing to consider when choosing a duvet cover. Bedding covers are made from different fabrics. The most common is cotton. Cotton is perfect for your bedding because it is very comfortable and soft. Since it is a natural material, it also 'breathes,' so to speak. You can also choose silk (which is very luxurious), faux suede, velvet (which is perfect for cold months), and a combination of two fabrics.
The bets part about duvet covers is the fact that you can change the fashion of your bed and room very quickly. Comforters are usually very expensive and hard to store so owning many of them is out of the question. Duvets however are easy to store and much more affordable. So you can style with different types of fabric, different patterns, and even with different enclosures. You can go for a traditional button up enclosure or choose the very practical zipper.
